What’s in my bag? This is such a big topic! When I first got into photography I was overwhelmed with the amount of options there are! As I learned more and more and nailed down my specialty I found gear that would give me the results that I wanted. I’ve gone through a lot of different gear, and have found a nice line-up that works for me!
When I first started photography I would see other’s pictures and have to know how they got that type of shot. I’ve learned that a lot of photography is about light, but it is also about knowing your gear! You don’t have to have the best gear out there, but you do need to know what it can do for you and how to make it work!
1. Camera Body
Nikon D750
My first “real” camera was a Christmas present from my husband. I have always loved photography and taking pictures. When we were dating we often drove around exploring and I would take tons of pictures with my cell phone. He bought me the camera and I never looked back. I took tons of pictures and had to learn everything I could about it. When I reached my max with the first camera, I upgraded to another. It was a great step up. It was only about a year after that first upgrade that I upgraded to the Nikon D750. This camera is a work horse, and has served me so well! It’s amazing in low light (never fails me at weddings!). It takes sharp action shots and lets me keep up with my kiddos. All my dreams wrapped up in one!
2. Lenses
Sigma Art 85mm 1.4
This is my go to lens! I loooooove this lens!! I’ve had it about a year, and use it at about every shoot I do! It is such a dreamy lens. Sharp focus, dreamy bokah. I have used this lens at every type of shoot and am always so happy with the results!
Sigma Art 35mm 1.4
I love this lens for indoor sessions! It lets in tons of light and allows me to get up close and personal. A lot of the time I have to let people know “yes i’m close to you, no i’m not only getting your nose” lol. It’s so fun for those close up, cuddly, giggly shots. I typically bring this to all my family sessions as it is very versatile!
Tamron 70-200 2.8
This is my newest baby. I use this 2nd most out of all the lenses I have! This is the Equine photographers dream lens. I photograph horses at a longer focal length so they aren’t distorted. Horses look bad distorted. Sometimes I’ll shoot horses at a wider angle if they are included in a family shot, or they are far away and I’m getting a landscape shot. But 90% of the time if there is a horse at the session, this is the lens I’m using! It’s also really handy for weddings! I am able to stand back and not be in the way, and still get those must have shots!
Nikon 24-70 2.8
This comes to allllll the weddings with me. This lens let me get in all the big family pictures. It lets me get in the whole temple. It’s for those wide open landscape shots. I don’t use it a ton, but definitely couldn’t get by without it!
Nikon Macro 100mm 2.8
I don’t use this lens enough! This is where all those fun close up ring shots come from. I’ve used it to get close up shots of eyes (horses, cats, dogs). Anything that I want to get a little closer for some detail this is the lens for that! It’s a little different to use and my settings change a lot when I put this lens on.
3. Extras
I always keep extra batteries and memory cards with me. Typically I won’t run out of battery or space on a card during our shoot, but I am always prepared for the unexpected!
4. Misc…
I also tend to keep lots of miscellaneous stuff in my bag for those “just in case” moments. Pens. Safety pins. Baby wipes. Lip gloss. Bobby pins. Horse treats ;). All the little things that you don’t think about until you really need them!
